SPRING '09 WEEK #13

Just two weeks left to go!

TODAY
1. Final Project photos, lets have a look. One-on-one.
2. Create a (2) new folders
  • FINAL EDIT. Put all your final images in here, for Part 1.
  • SLIDESHOW. Put all your edited images for the slideshow in here, size them 72dpi.

3. Audio
  • start to edit audio in iMovie.
  • Add photos.
  • Add title slide & text slide from CLASS FOLDER; see (2) .psd files. Copy to your folder
FINAL PROJECT:
-The Final Project is due Monday May 11th. During FINAL CLASS, attendance required.
This is a firm deadline, no exceptions

PART 1
The final edit images must be submitted to the DROP folder.
NO FOLDERS, just images.
15-20 different images, no more than 20.
  • Project should include at least one: vertical, detail, and overall.
  • At least (8) photos must contain people.
  • -Each image must be captioned properly in File Info.
  • The first image in your series MUST have a brief summary of your project, in addition to the caption. 2-3 sentences, be brief and concise.
  • Each image must be slugged properly lastname_final 01.jpg, lastname_final 02.jpg, etc
  • Each image must be cropped, toned, sized, etc in Photoshop
  • Each image should be sized to 10 inches at longest side, 200dpi
  • Each image should be less than 2MGS. Save it at a lower compression if too big.
  • Sequence your images in the best story telling manner.

PART 2
Create an audio slide show or video. 1-3 minutes long.
This should consist of audio of your Final Project subject; interview, ambient sound, narration, music, etc. Project does not need to consist of all these audio elements, only those required to create an effective story-telling piece. Decide which is the best approach for your particular subject.
  • Use no more than 30 photos. Keep the piece under 3-minutes.
  • Edit in iMovie or similar software.
  • Submit 1 video file in Quicktime .mov format.
  • Submit to the drop folder
  • Slug: lastname_finalproject.mov

FINAL PROJECT- warning

Class,
Failure to shoot and submit photos of your final project each week will reflect negatively in your grade. Many of you are now over two-weeks behind and have yet to show any work. Let me remind you that your final project should reflect 4-6 weeks of work, and must be shot in a progressive manner. I also remind you that the final project makes up 25% of your final grade.

Consider this a gentle final warning. I want everyone to do well, but thus far I am very disappointed in the lack of production. Please get busy now.

Also, no folders in the DROP, just images slugged correctly. Submit new images, AND bring out-takes for me to look at.

And bring your recorders.

SPRING '09 WEEK #09


Life was the first all-photography U.S. news magazine and dominated the market for more than forty years. Life celebrated the "photo essay." Life was wildly successful for generations before its prestige was diminished by economics and changing tastes. Since 1972, Life has twice ceased publication and resumed in a different form, before ceasing once again with the issue dated April 20, 2007. Environmental Business Portrait

Make well-composed, expressive personality portrait of a person in their place of work environment. Photo should give insight into what the person does, product, if any, should be present. The environment should be obvious and explanatory. Make photos of subject in different positions, locations, etc.

REMEMBER, THE PHOTOGRAPHER IS IN CONTROL, SUBJECT SHOULD BE DIRECTED, POSED, AND WELL-LIT.

This is NOT an action photo assignment.

The person should not be mom, dad, boy friend, girl friend, or be the place where you work. Find someone not close to you. Find someone with a visual environment.

Part 2
Environmental Personality Portrait
Make well-composed, expressive personality portrait of a person in their personal environment. Photo should give insight into what the person is like. The environment should be obvious and expressive. Make photos of subject in different positions, locations, etc.
IT’S OK if the person is mom, dad, boy friend, girlfriend.
Find someone with a visual environment.

Submit (2) different photos from each, (4) total images.
Photos must include:
1. Use flash if necessary.
2. Heavy emphasis on light; natural or flash. This photo should NOT have poor lighting, poor white balance, or noise.
3. Heavy emphasis on composition; there should be no sloppy images with inappropriate or distracting objects within the frame.
Remember, with portraiture the photographer is in control
of the subject; positioning, light, lens selection, setting, etc.
Photographer may manipulate subject during the photo
session.
*Students must complete:

STORY SUBJECT: The college has announced the possibility of mass layoffs for faculty and staff at the college. Assignment is to make photographs of campus employees doing their jobs, to accompany story. Each student will be responsible for different subject.

Discuss possible photo-op’s in class.

-Find someone doing their job, and photograph them, preferably in-action. In some cases photograph them first, then approach them and ask them for information to complete an informational caption. Ask: Who, what, when, where, why.

-Find a good visual.
-Make interesting documentary photos. use flash if necessary. Make well composed, photos, that give a strong sense of the person and their job. Get something you can use.

-Submit (5) edited images to DROP folder, including:
(1) wide angle, (1) telephoto, (1) detail, (1) over-all establishing shot.
Be sure to caption and slug correctly.

-Use bounce flash whenever possible.
-AVOID: red eye, shadows behind heads, and other forms of sloppy flash use.

Keep in mind some of the elements of good composition, avoiding; cluttered and distracting backgrounds, objects appearing behind heads, dead space, etc. Fill the frame, making interesting, personality-filled photos, that have impact.

Weegee (Arthur Fellig)
American, 1899-1968

Although Weegee photographed a wide panorama of urban life, the documentation of violent crimes, disasters, and their survivors and onlookers was Weegee's specialty. His work for New York City newspapers and photosyndicates in the 1930s and 1940s brought him international attention. His best-known images have a rawness and spontaneity rarely encountered.

Weegee was born Usher Fellig in Zloczew, Austria (now in Poland). His name was changed to Arthur at Ellis Island when he came with his family to live on New York's Lower East Side in 1910. He quit school at age 14 to help support his family, working at odd jobs and as an itinerant street photographer and assistant to a commercial photographer.

Fellig had been a passport photographer for three years when he was hired in 1924 as a darkroom technician by Acme Newspictures (soon to become United Press International Photos). He left Acme in 1935 to freelance as a police beat photographer on the night shift. He used a standard 4" X 5" Speed Graphic camera with large-bulb flash to produce photographs that were published in nearly all of New York's papers over the next ten years. From 1940 to 1945 he was a staff photographer at PM magazine.

Fellig gained a reputation for knowing where disaster would strike next, hence the name "Weegee," a reference to the fortune-teller's Ouija board. He was aided in scooping competing photographers by carefully monitoring police and fire-department radio dispatches. In 1938 he was the first photographer to obtain permission to install police radio equipment in his car.
Weegee had a gift for self-promotion which led to his stamping the backs of his prints with "Credit Photo: Weegee the Famous" in the early 1940s. He did not become truly famous, however, until the publication of his book, Naked City, the rights to which were bought by Hollywood for a film and television series. This book contained his crime photography and images of New York City's lonely and dispossessed. In addition to the hard-flash, frontal shots that were his trademark, he made photographs with infrared flash and film, which allowed him to work as unobtrusively as possible.

For several years from the mid-1940s on, Weegee abandoned crime photos and concentrated on advertising assignments for Vogue, Holiday, Life, Look, and Fortune. He lived in Hollywood from 1947 to 1952, working as a consultant and bit player in films. He began a series of photo-caricatures and photo-distortions of celebrities and politicians. This work was not greeted with the same enthusiasm Naked City had received, but Weegee continued his experiments. He completed several short films in the 1950s using kaleidoscopic lenses, mirrors, and other distorting techniques. A mass of contradictions, Weegee's praise at this time was reserved for Atget, Cartier-Bresson, and W. Eugene Smith.

Weegee published several other books, including Naked Hollywood and Weegee by Weegee, his autobiography. He lectured on his work throughout the United States, Europe, and the Soviet Union. He was a neglected figure at the time of his death.

More WEEGEE
He captured tenement infernos, car crashes, and gangland executions. He found washed-up lounge singers and teenage murder suspects in paddy wagons and photographed them at their most vulnerable — or, as he put it, their most human. He caught couples kissing on their beach blankets on Coney Island and the late-night voyeurs on lifeguard stands watching them. And everywhere he went, he snatched images of people sleeping: drunks on park benches, whole families on Lower East Side fire escapes, men and women snoring in movie theaters. He was the supreme chronicler of the city at night. He was the only shutterbug that would make it to a murder scene before the cops. Weegee loved New York and New York eventually loved Weegee.
Weegee was born June 12, 1899, in Austria, under the name Usher Fellig. Shortly after he was born his father left for America, where he was a Rabbi while saving enough money to send for the rest of his family. At the age of ten, Weegee with his mother and three brothers, finally arrived to America. At Ellis Island, Weegee's name was changed from Usher to Arthur.(Aperture 5-9)

Early Life. As far as education, Weegee made it through the eighth grade. However, the family needed money and Weegee was needed to help work. He worked a lot of odd jobs: he helped his father with a push cart business, he even worked at a candy store for a while. It was when he had his picture taken by a street tintype photographer that he decided that this was what he was meant to do. Weegee often said that he was, "A natural-born photographer, with hypo in my blood." He quickly ordered a tintype outfit from a Chicago mail-order house, and after a few months he got his first job as a commercial photographer. After a few years he left the studio, due to a disagreement on what he should be paid. He then bought a second-hand 5x7 view camera and rented a pony from a local stable. He named the pony "Hypo," and on the weekends when the kids were in their best clothes, he would walk around town putting kids on his pony and taking their picture. He would then develop the negatives, make prints, and go back to the families of the kids to try to sell them the photos.

Acme Newspictures. At the age of twenty-four, Weegee got his big break working for Acme Newspictures. Acme was the source for stock photos for their own paper and other papers around the country. Weegee started off working in the darkroom, developing other photographers' work for the paper. Occasionally, when all the other Acme photographers were busy or sleeping, he would get to go out at night and take pictures of emergencies. After a few years of working for Acme, Weegee started to get called to do assignments and cover stories. This was what he always wanted; the only problem was that he worked for Acme, and thus, he never got credit for the photos he turned in. In 1935 he got tired of doing other peoples' work and left Acme to go out and try to free-lance his own work. The girls around Acme gave him the name "Weegee" after the board game. They said he always seemed to know where to be when a story broke.

Free-lance Photographer. Weegee worked on his own as a free-lance photographer for the next ten years. He started to work out of Manhattan Police Headquarters; he would arrive around midnight and check the Teletype machine to see if any stories had broke. After a few years he decided he didn't want to wait for the news to come over the Teletype. He bought himself a 1938 Chevy Coupe and a press card, and he was allowed to have a police radio in the car (the only press photographer ever allowed to have a police radio in their car). Weegee's car was his home away from home, his office on the road. In the trunk he kept everything he would need including a portable dark-room, extra cameras, flash bulbs, extra loaded holders, a typewriter, cigars, salami and a change of clothes. "I was no longer glued to the Teletype machine at police headquarters. I had my wings. I no longer had to wait for crime to come to me; I could go after it. The police radio was my life line. My camera... my life and my love... was my Aladdin's lamp." (Weegee by Weegee 52). After ten years he published his first book, The Naked City, which was inspired by the city he loved. It was during these ten years that Weegee produced some of his most expressive and beautiful photos.
Photographic Training. Weegee never had any formal photographic training. He never heard of Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, or even the Museum of Modern Art. The work Weegee did came strictly from his heart. None of his photos were planned; his 4x5 speed graphic camera was preset at f/16 @ 1/200 of a second, with a focal distance of ten feet. All of his photos were taken at this setting with a flash. What photographic training Weegee may have needed to be a great photographer, he learned as he worked for Acme, or he just taught himself. Style, texture, or even quality of the photography did not matter much to Weegee. He was more concerned with capturing a moment of time on film. He recorded history as it happened. He had only a split second to capture the emotions of an event as they unfolded. A good example of this is the photograph of the Mother and Daughter crying as they watch another daughter and young baby burning to death inside a tenement fire. All that Weegee could really say about this photograph was, "I cried when I took this picture."

In 1939, Weegee took a portrait of a mother and her son in Harlem. Even a photograph that Weegee would consider to be a portrait showed an incredible amount of emotion. With a snap of the shutter he told the story of this poor woman. The way he positioned her and her son behind the broken glass is representative of the shattered life she lived. Yet even with despair all around her, she still has a look of hope in her eyes, as if she were saying that she cannot give up. She has a sense of pride as she holds her son. This is the power and gift that Weegee had with a camera.
It is impossible to look at a work by Weegee and not get emotionally involved. That was the whole point to his photographs — he wanted the viewer to get involved. On one of the first stories Weegee had to cover, he was asked to get photos of a kid that was abandoned by its mother. In his autobiography Weegee stated, "They (the cops) wanted pictures of the kid, so that the mother, seeing the picture in the papers, might become remorseful and come to claim the child." Weegee was ready to take a smiling picture when the nurse stopped him. The nurse stuck the baby with a pin, the kid started to cry and the nurse said "Now take a shot...This will bring the mother back." Luckily for the baby, this did bring the mother back. (Weegee by Weegee 56) Weegee had a job to do — this was the way he made a living. He had to make pictures that the newspapers would want to buy, and the newspapers wanted drama.

Being a free-lance photographer was not an easy job during this point in history. Not a lot of people could make it as long as Weegee had. Even when things were going bad, Weegee had good spirits about it. He was always able to find happiness in whatever he was doing. He loved people, he loved photographing people, and he loved being with people. In his work he confronted murder, brutality, children in need, brawls, the homeless, fires and victims. He also confronted people who were happy, lovers, celebrations and the end of the War. Weegee's work stands on its own — it's meant to be viewed one at a time, not as a group. With each shot, Weegee captured a truth that can never be recreated.

Weegee died of a brain tumor on December 26, 1968. Today Weegee is credited with ushering in the age of tabloid culture, while at the same time being revered for elevating the sordid side of human life to that of high art.

I'm writing this as of 10pm Sunday night, and it's just starting to snow, so I am going to cancel class for tomorrow. I would like you to shoot some photos tomorrow in the snow however. Read the assignment below, it's also in the Assignment Folder. Keep a towel with you and keep your camera dry. Use whatever camera you have access to. If u have no camera at your disposal, and only if you have no real camera, use a cell phone camera.

(Due Monday MARCH 9 –two weeks)
Live Event (Multiple Pictures)

Cover a Live Event / Multiple Pictures
Select a scheduled public event and photograph all aspects of the event in the form of a photo essay. Be sure to shoot various scenes, including overalls and details, and illustrate what the event is about. Get photos of all the important people and subject matter.
Select a carefully chosen event to shoot, thus you have two weeks to plan.

Suggestions; news event, parade, protest, performance, etc.

Do not shoot a sporting event, a press conference, fair, etc.. Check newspaper, campus fliers, and magazine listings for a schedule of events in your area.

Select an event that will be visual, not something static like someone standing at a podium talking. Think of some of the work reviewed in class. Your event selection is key, give it some thought and planning.

Be prepared to use your flash if necessary. Keep in mind some of the elements of good composition, avoiding; cluttered and distracting backgrounds, objects appearing behind heads, dead space, etc. Fill the frame, making interesting photographs that have impact. Composition, positioning, background, and lens selection should all be taken into consideration.
Photos as a collection should illustrate what the event is about.

1.PUT ALL YOUR PHOTOS IN YOUR PUBLIC FOLDER
2. Select (5-8) different images must be submitted. Be sure to include:
-people in at least (3) photos.
-(1) over-all, scene setter.
-(1) detail or close up. Can be of a person. Make it relevant.
Do not select repetitive photos.

-CAPTION: be sure to get subject’s names and brief description of what they are doing,; who, what, when, where, why. Missing names will hurt your grade.

*Students must complete:

1. Select (5-8) best photos, including; an overall & detail. Do not select repetitive photos.
2. SLUG PHOTO AS FOLLOWS:

PART 1
Lighting MUST be the key element in these photos. DO NOT USE A FLASH!

SUBJECT: “Put your camera in a different place,” using one of the lighting techniques described below.

1. Photo with strong sense of ARTIFICIAL light:
Make well-composed and expressive photo using one of the lighting techniques discussed in class. Photo should have exceptionally strong quality of light. Lighting technique should be very obvious.
This need not be a documentary-style photo, but do not manipulate the image in Photoshop.
-Do NOT USE A CAMERA FLASH!!!!!!!!!
Lighting must be natural; sun, or cloudy day. Can be indoors or outdoors.
Keep in mind some of the elements of good composition, avoiding; cluttered and distracting backgrounds, objects appearing behind heads, dead space, etc. Fill the frame, making interesting photos that have impact.

By now, we should be well aware of the technical considerations that determine a photograph, such as aperture, shutter speed, lens selection, and camera types. You should also be familiar with the categories of the "Visual language."

So, in looking at Jerome Delay's iconic image from Iraq,
what can your determine?

Photo shows
hundreds of Iraqis storming the Abu Ghraib jail Oct. 20, 2002 following the announcement by President Saddam Hussein that most of Iraq's prisoners would be freed. Tens of thousands of prisoners were greeted by their relatives and friends upon their release.
